Something/Someone that distorts or blurs facts, figures, etc., like a magic or conjuring work; artful deception; tricky inventiveness.
Smoke and Mirrors is a Corten steel sculpture with a section of highly polished steel cladding on the first nine meters above ground, reflecting the sky around it. It is located at the top of the former military peninsula Odderøya, and functions as a chimney to shield the city and the recreational area from sewage smell. The mirror illusion renders the chimney apparently floating above the treetops when viewed from a distance, whilst reflecting the forest and the viewer in its immediate surroundings. The sculpture is framed by a Corten rectangle filled with white gravel, and paired with a second pool with an abstracted cairn overlooking the fjord.
Smoke and Mirrors was the winning entry to the national art-competition (Koro) at Odderøya sewage plant.
